The international labour organization estimated that, at least 60,000 fatal accidents occur each year on the construction site worldwide. The construction industry has an extremely high number of accidents reported each year. Lots of these accidents could be minimized if PPEs are used correctly. These PPEs refers to all equipment like devices, appliances and all associated accessories that is worn by an individual in order to provide protection against health risk and accident. It is very important to protect very sensible areas of the body that can evade you from any serious damage.
SOME AREAS THAT ARE EXPOSED TO DAMAGE AND INJURIES
1 The skin, the respiratory system such as lungs that inhale hazardous dust
2 The head that is exposed to dangerous falls and head damages.
The human body particularly have sensitive areas and are exposed to serious damage particularly when they are exposed. If the skin comes in contact with a sensitizer, then the effect could be long term re – occurring and if the eyes come in contact with corrosive substances, it can cause the individual’s permeant blindness. If you inhale silica dust regularly, it will cause lung cancer in the long run.
These are the after effects of neglecting PPEs and it will not have immediate effect it will also have great side effects on the individual’s life in the long run.
SOME COMMON HAZARD
- FALLS; working at height can happen and you fall, but the injuries may be minimal if you were wearing your PPE But if not, the outcome will be of great negative impact that can lead to death. Like the case of an aged man who was painting the newly constructed walls of the general hospital who left from high height and fell down. It is reported that his head got broken and that he was not wearing his PPE. So that said, if the individual was having his PE, such injury won’t have happened because we can’t prevent accidents from occurring but we can be precautious.
- Electrical hazards; workers exposed to wires and faulty equipment can cause electrical shocks.
- Chemical exposure; handling hazardous substances can lead to burns or respiratory issues.
- Noise; constant loud noise can damage the hearing organ over time.
- Flying debris; particles from cutting or drilling that can injure your eyes or skin
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH PPE FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS.
- Helmets; it protects the head from falling objects and impact
- Safety boots; it provides protection to your foot against heavy objects and slippery surfaces.
- Gloves; shield hands from cuts, burns and chemical exposure.
- Respirators; filters out harmful dust and fumes from the air.
- High – visibility clothing; makes workers easily seen especially in low light conditions
In conclusion, personal protective equipments are vital tools for construction workers to maintain their health and safety on site. Once you understand its importance, you will be able to recognize potential hazards and you will be able to take all the safety precautions thus construction workers can reduce injuries and accident themselves at the construction site. So, lets adhere to regulation and standards by using the right tools and equipment and let’s make sure we give proper training to workers and make sure they use them correctly. Additionally, being prepared for emergencies ensures that workers can respond quickly and efficiently when accident occur. So, let’s all prioritize the use of PPEs in construction.
